Elena

“I don’t even know how it happened.” I massage my temples as I recount my Friday evening to Audrey. “One minute I was having zucchini lasagna and listening to Giovanni ramble, and the next, I was blowing my boss.”

“You what?” Audrey shrieks and a piece of bread crumb falls out onto the table.

A couple at a table nearby turns to look at us. Audrey lowers her voice after gulping down some coffee. “Did I hear you right? By boss, you mean Keith? The asshole who…?”

I nod. Her brown eyes widen to the size of saucers as the result of the shock. I don’t blame her for overreacting since I couldn’t sleep a wink last night because of the absurd experience.

I wish I could blame alcohol again—the Lucente recommended by Giovanni was superb, and I had two glasses. But then my mind was clear when I was driving or working with the clients. No matter how hard I try, I can’t deny the horrible fact: I am attracted to the jerk.

“What does it mean, then?” she whispers, recovering from the shock.

“It means I’m in trouble, Aud,” I say, emptying my coffee cup. “I’ll really have to quit now.” How did things take such a dramatic turn so quickly? Just two days ago, I thought it wasn’t so bad working with Keith, and I was ready to accept his offer and stay with Prestige. I’ve even written my first blog on the website he built for me. True, there was the spill of coffee and my masturbation in the bathtub, but I thought I got it under control. I didn’t take them as warning signs. Shit.

“Are you sure?” Audrey looks at me, worriedly. “I mean, starting over isn’t easy.”

“I know,” I mumble, touched by my friend’s concern for me. “But I don’t have a choice.”

She reaches out to pat my hand. “Don’t stress yourself out, Elena. You’re strong and capable, and you’ll do fine anywhere you go. I’m convinced you’re a real estate genius.”

I grin, feeling better by her faith in me. “I’m going to get a broker’s license and be my own boss.”

“Good!” she smiles. “And hire me for a secretary.”

“I don’t think I can afford you.” I chuckle, not taking her seriously.

“I mean it,” she says, suddenly looking pensive. “I think there is no way I can avoid divorce. I’ll have to look for a job soon.”

I stop smiling. It’s my turn to comfort her. “Wouldn’t you get child support and alimony?”

“Yeah, but I can’t depend on the asshole. I don’t know what would happen in the future anymore.”

I reach to squeeze her hand. Audrey used to be naïve and optimistic, and it was why she agreed to marry Daren after just a month’s dating. Now she’s a different person. I detect worry lines on her youthful face.

I’m going to assure her I would hire her if I opened my own business when Bella came over and asked me, “So how was Giovanni?”

It takes me a moment to gather my answer to that question.
